(GRA 401) PROJECT 1 - LOGO DESIGN

A corporate logo is the most important component of a brand identity. The shape, color, typeface, etc. should be distinctly different from the others in a similar market. The most effective logos are the ones that are instictly recognizable, and that evoke some sort of emotional response. Well designed logos work well at different sizes, and even in one color.

A logotype is brandname set in a special typeface\font arranged in a particular , but legible, way; which uniquely identifies corporations, products, services, institutions, agencies, associations, events, or any kind of organizations in order to differentiate publicly the owner of the logotype from the other entities.

In this project the students were asked to design a logo, consisting of a logotype and an emblem, for a new modern international sports company: "steps" which aims to compete with brands like Nike and Adidas.

In groups of 5 or 6 people, they first started a research and a visual collection of five main competitors: Nike, Adidas, Puma, Reebok and Slazenger. Each group would pick one of these and make a extensive research of its logo development, brand identity, marketing strategy and general concept. Researches and visual material presented in class. On final submission, on an A3 sheet, they were asked to show a color and black and white application of logo, 15 cm x 15 cm each; as well a color and black and white scalled application, 3 cm x 3 cm each.

(GRA 401) PROJECT 2 - DESIGNER'S BOOK

Today, in the age of desktop publishing, we are surrounded by numerous examples of books, magazines, newspapers and other visual media; pages and pages of text and image designed by professionals to create a bright and beautiful way to zero information content. Editorial design has become content without meaning, smartly done up to use combinations of pictures and type so that words become decorative and text merely a component in a visual look.

For once, the students as designers are asked to be both the author and the designer of a book. The aim of this project is to author a work from its contents to its design. Since the students determined all the components of this work, it is called a "designer’s book".

Research, compilation, design and execution are among the essential steps they needed to take in this project.
The first phase required them to find a ‘topic’ and make an extensive research on it. For a topic, they could select any subject which they find interesting and worth for studying. The students tried not to be very individual or very general, so that they could limit their research. Also, they considered their topic’s appeal for the audience. How would it communicate itself and what kind of an effect it would create, if their work is published and placed on a shelf in a bookstore.

When they decided on their topic, you compiled their research materials: illustrations, photographs, drawings, articles, your writings, poetry etc. Once they had their material ready, they started working on their format and layout.
Finally, after the students completed their design, they were expected to execute it as a 3D prototype: folded, bound and ready for use.

(GRA 401) PROJECT 3 - TURKISH CINEMA POSTER

As early as 1896 Cinématographie Lumiere was introduced to Turkish society. Since the first film by a Turkish cinematographer ( Fuat Uzkınay, "Ayastefenos’taki Rus Abidesi'nin Yıkılışı", 1941, the film industry practiced a vast array of genres, raising notable directors and films.

Directors such as Lütfü Akat [Kanun Namına, 1952], Memdüh Ün [Üç Arkadas, 1958], Metin Erksan [Acı Hayat, 1962; Yılanların Öcü,1952; Sevmek Zamanı,1965] helped to establish a certain cinematic language. Their research in cinema was carried further by younger generations of directors and their works, such as Yılmaz Güney [Umut, 1970], Atıf Yımaz [Aaah Belinda, 1986], Erden Kıral [Hakkari'de Bir Mevsim, 1986], Tunc Başaran [Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar, 1988]

To day, Turkish cinema exhibits colorful background ranging from melodrama to action drama to comedy with me tasted cult figures like Turist Ömer, Şöför Nebahat or Şaban. With new productions and directors, like R. Erdem, F. Özpetek, Gani Müjde,Y. Erdogan, etc.Turkish cinema continues its development both in commercial and independent directors.

In this project, the students were required to choose and study a film in Turkish cinema, and design a poster for it. The films should represent the time period 2000-2006, and as being an entertainment poster, the visual impact of the students' work is, as equally important as its success in representing the contents of the film.

(GRA 401) PROJECT 4 - SOCIAL CAMPAIGN

This is a four-piece project where the students conceptualized and worked on a social awareness campaign. Social awareness campaigns are usually organized by non-profit organizations with the aim of creating a consciousness and making a change in the society and culture. They are usually based on the current social, cultural, political or economical problems that exist in a society.

In this project,
the students were asked to address the current social problems that exist in our society and create a conceptual solution using the tools of visual communications.

The first phase required
the students to find a ‘topic’ and make an extensive research on it. Some examples of social issues they could study for this project were:
• Domestic violence
• Substance abuse (Smoking, alcohol, drugs)
• Education (the lack of it) • Homeless people
• Stray animals
• The role of women in the society
• Problems of traffic and transportation etc.…

After they decided on the social issue
they would like to address, the students were to come up with an imaginary non-profit organization as the source of campaign, and design a logo for it.

The next phase required them to come up with a design concept and apply it in the form of TV-Cinema Ad., story board, a billboard and a newspaper advertisement, promotional items were the laststage of the project.
