(GRA 401) PROJECT 3 - TURKISH CINEMA POSTER

As early as 1896 Cinématographie Lumiere was introduced to Turkish society. Since the first film by a Turkish cinematographer ( Fuat Uzkınay, "Ayastefenos’taki Rus Abidesi'nin Yıkılışı", 1941, the film industry practiced a vast array of genres, raising notable directors and films.

Directors such as Lütfü Akat [Kanun Namına, 1952], Memdüh Ün [Üç Arkadas, 1958], Metin Erksan [Acı Hayat, 1962; Yılanların Öcü,1952; Sevmek Zamanı,1965] helped to establish a certain cinematic language. Their research in cinema was carried further by younger generations of directors and their works, such as Yılmaz Güney [Umut, 1970], Atıf Yımaz [Aaah Belinda, 1986], Erden Kıral [Hakkari'de Bir Mevsim, 1986], Tunc Başaran [Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar, 1988]

To day, Turkish cinema exhibits colorful background ranging from melodrama to action drama to comedy with me tasted cult figures like Turist Ömer, Şöför Nebahat or Şaban. With new productions and directors, like R. Erdem, F. Özpetek, Gani Müjde,Y. Erdogan, etc.Turkish cinema continues its development both in commercial and independent directors.

In this project, the students were required to choose and study a film in Turkish cinema, and design a poster for it. The films should represent the time period 2000-2006, and as being an entertainment poster, the visual impact of the students' work is, as equally important as its success in representing the contents of the film.
